Golden Retriever: feathering and a double coat

The Golden Retriever has a flat or wavy coat with feathering over a dense, water-resistant undercoat. The FCI standard describes a balanced, powerful outline and colors ranging through gold and cream. Its coat offers a clear starting point when comparing it with other retrievers.

What the longer hair changes visually

Feathering is the longer hair that gives parts of the coat a fringed appearance. The Labrador’s standard instead calls for a short, dense coat without wave or feathering. The Curly makes another useful contrast: its tight curls have no undercoat.

The Golden’s undercoat is the dense layer beneath its outer hair. Coat length alone misses this difference between a feathered double coat and the Curly’s curled body coat.

Compare time and space as well as coats

The earlier UK guide lists grooming more than once a week, while the Labrador entry lists once a week. Both have more than two hours of daily exercise in the guide, alongside a large house and large garden. Their location category covers town or country.

Use these older categories to compare the time and space you have available, rather than choosing on coat color alone. They do not provide an individual dog’s care schedule.

Reading the size comparison

The Golden’s FCI heights are stated as ranges, not as ideal points, and the standard gives no numeric weight. Separate publisher weight descriptions appear below.

The Flat Coated is another feathered retriever worth comparing, but its standard describes preferred measurements and attaches a condition to weight. The Labrador gives a simpler visual contrast in coat length and feathering.
