Griffon Bruxellois: rough and smooth coats mean different grooming jobs
The UK Griffon Bruxellois profile covers both rough and smooth coats on a square, compact body. The care job therefore depends on the coat actually present. Shared moderate activity and routine handling remain part of the day whichever coat the dog has.
The UK outline and weight description
The earlier UK guide gives a weight of 3.2–5 kg, with 3.6–4.5 kg most desirable, without a numerical height. It describes a square outline, short level back, deep chest and short, strong loin.
Its rough coat is harsh and wiry, preferably with undercoat and free from curl. The smooth coat is short and tight. The UK medium-length overview needs that fuller two-coat explanation when you are comparing the maintenance work.
Use the care advice for the actual coat
The AKC Brussels Griffon guide explicitly separates smooth and rough care. For smooth coats it recommends weekly brushing, daily during seasonal shedding, and occasional baths. Rough-coated pets may have the hair clipped, usually retaining the beard, by an owner or professional groomer.
The UK grooming category is more than once weekly. Include regular nail trimming, ear checks and tooth brushing from the AKC guidance as well. A groomer familiar with the coat can demonstrate an appropriate routine rather than applying one method to both types.
Moderate daily activity together
The UK exercise category is up to half an hour, with a flat or apartment and small or medium garden in either setting. The AKC suggests at least half an hour of moderate activity and shared play. It also cautions about breathing in hot or humid weather; plan the timing and effort of outings around the individual dog and conditions.
Compare feathered spaniel coats
The Cavalier has long, silky feathering and regular brushing with weekly ear checks. The King Charles Spaniel has its own pin-brush and comb routine. Their longer hair creates different work from either the Griffon’s close smooth coat or its rough beard and body hair.
