Harrier: a compact hound with distinct height guidance
The Harrier resembles some other smooth-coated hounds, but its size guidance needs its own reading. Daily outdoor activity and a regular short-coat routine are more useful ownership questions than choosing by a familiar color pattern.
FCI and UK height descriptions
The FCI standard gives 48–55 cm maximum, with 48–50 cm preferred, without dividing that guidance by sex. The earlier UK text instead gives ideal heights of 53 cm for males and 48 cm for females, with a tolerance of 2.5 cm smaller. Those are different descriptions and should remain separate.
The UK description includes a deep chest and level topline with a slight arch over the loin. FCI independently describes a straight, muscular back, a strong, slightly arched loin and a chest deeper than it is wide. No numeric weight range is supplied.
A straightforward weekly routine
FCI describes smooth, flat hair that is not too short. AKC care guidance recommends weekly brushing with a soft-bristle brush or hound glove, occasional bathing with a gentle shampoo, ear checks and nail care. The UK grooming category is also weekly.
Ask for advice if ear cleaning is needed rather than attempting an unfamiliar procedure. Checking the ears and nails can be included alongside the brush-out, leaving the coat routine practical and regular.
Activity with the dog
The UK guide lists more than two hours of daily exercise, a large house, large garden and country setting. AKC calls for ample daily exercise and describes long walks or hikes and activities such as tracking, rally and coursing ability tests.
AKC also advises a leash on walks and a secure enclosure for loose exercise. Plan the routes and shared activities available to you through the week, adapting the workload to the individual dog. A country address does not establish that the exercise area is enclosed.
Compare the dimensions
English Foxhounds have a taller approximate FCI range of 58–64 cm. Hamiltonstovare have separate male and female ideals within allowed height ranges and a rectangular outline. Read the different size wording alongside the coat and activity routines before deciding which comparison best fits your circumstances.
