Irish Water Spaniel: crisp curls with a smooth, tapering tail

The Irish Water Spaniel has a compact, strongly built outline and a rounded, barrel-like body in its FCI description. Dense, tight ringlets give the coat a crisp texture, with natural oiliness rather than woolliness. The contrast with the flatter-haired spaniels is visible before any size comparison.

The curls do not cover every part alike

The throat has a smooth V-shaped patch. On the tail, short curls cover the first 7.5–10 cm at the base; the rest is smooth and tapers to a fine point. Describing the entire tail as curly would miss one of the breed’s clearest distinctions.

The Field Spaniel’s long, flat feathering and the American Cocker’s silky, flat or slightly wavy coat offer two different comparisons. Neither has the Irish Water Spaniel’s crisp body ringlets.

Leave room for the guide’s time and space categories

The earlier UK guide records more than two hours of daily exercise, grooming more than once a week, a large house and large garden in a country setting. The Field Spaniel has a smaller home category with the same exercise and grooming entries.

The American Cocker is listed for daily grooming instead. These earlier categories help compare the commitment alongside appearance; a curly coat is not a reason to assume little grooming or a particular household fit.

Curls call for a grooming plan

AKC’s Irish Water Spaniel care advice recommends introducing gentle grooming while the dog is young, brushing at least weekly and trimming about every two months. An owner can learn the scissor work or use a groomer familiar with the breed. The earlier UK guide lists ‘No’ for shedding, alongside grooming more than once a week. That combination still involves regular coat care.

Long walks, hikes and ball games are among AKC’s activity suggestions. These provide outdoor options alongside the coat-care commitment. A water-related breed name does not make every activity compulsory.

Its own height ranges

The FCI heights are 53–59 cm for males and 51–56 cm for females. No numeric weight is supplied. Compare those heights and the body outline with the Field and American Cocker profiles, while remembering that the Irish Water standard gives no weight target.
