King Charles Spaniel: feathering, comb work and daily lead walks

The King Charles Spaniel has a compact, cobby frame and long, silky furnishings. Its coat needs regular brushing and attention to tangles. Daily lead walks and suitable conditions remain part of the care plan alongside the time spent grooming.

A weight range and a short back

Both FCI and earlier UK descriptions give weight as 3.6–6.3 kg, without a numerical shoulder height here. The body is compact with a short, level back and a wide, deep chest. These proportions distinguish it from simply being a smaller version of another feathered spaniel.

The coat is long, silky and straight, permitting a slight wave but no curl, with plentiful feathering on the ears, legs and tail. The AKC care page uses the name English Toy Spaniel for its own guidance; the UK profile and its measurements remain distinct from the Cavalier.

Pin brush, comb and routine handling

The AKC recommends brushing at least twice weekly with a pin or soft-bristle brush, using a long-toothed metal comb for tangles. The UK category is more than once weekly. Ask a groomer to demonstrate gentle work through the furnishings and any suitable tidying around the feet or face.

The same guide suggests monthly nail trimming and baths every four to six weeks with dog shampoo. Its care advice also includes regular ear checks and frequent tooth brushing. Include those smaller handling tasks rather than stopping after the visible coat looks neat.

Walks suited to the conditions

The UK exercise category is up to half an hour, with a flat or apartment and small or medium garden in either setting. The AKC describes daily lead walks and cautions against leaving this short-faced dog outdoors in warm or humid weather. Plan activity and rest around the dog and the conditions.

Compare separate feathered breeds

The Cavalier has a higher weight range and its own regular-brushing and weekly-ear-check advice. The Japanese Chin has a different size description and a monthly-bath routine adjusted to surroundings. A shared silky appearance does not make every grooming interval or outing interchangeable.
