Lakeland Terrier: a harsh coat with stripping and clipping choices
The Lakeland Terrier has a compact body, a reasonably narrow chest and a harsh double coat. The grooming choice affects the coat’s appearance and texture, so discuss the intended routine before choosing a finish.
Height, weight and coat
FCI height must not exceed 37 cm. Weight is 7.7 kg for males and 6.8 kg for females. The earlier UK description gives the same height limit but average weights of 8 kg and 7 kg. These figures retain their own source and wording.
The coat is dense and harsh with good undercoat. The back is strong and moderately short, with a well-coupled loin. A short coat-length category does not fully describe that layered texture.
Ask about the maintenance method
AKC care guidance describes hand-stripping for the harsh coat and offers clipping as an alternative, noting that color and texture can change and the coat may become softer and curlier. It recommends weekly brushing to remove loose hair caught in the coat and address matting.
The UK overview lists grooming more than once a week. The AKC guide also includes regular ear checks and frequent tooth brushing with dog toothpaste. Ask a groomer how to care for the chosen finish between appointments.
A daily outing and room to move
The UK guide lists up to one hour of exercise, a small house, small or medium garden and either town or country. AKC describes a good daily walk or brisk jog alongside frequent opportunities to run in securely fenced space.
Choose activity appropriate to the dog’s age and condition and identify the enclosed area you can actually use. Time spent moving and playing together is a separate question from the amount of floor space at home.
Compare other hard coats
Welsh Terriers have a higher FCI height limit and their own pet-clipping schedule. Wire Fox Terriers have specific outer-coat lengths and a different show-versus-pet grooming discussion. Compare these practical routines alongside the measurements, rather than choosing solely by a similar clipped outline.
