Long Haired Pyrenean Sheepdog: coat texture and individual finish
The Long Haired Pyrenean Sheepdog has a lean body slightly longer than its height and a windswept coat. Some coats can form strands or cords in particular areas. Understanding the individual texture is more useful than treating every long-haired dog as either a fully brushed coat or a cord-making project.
Own size and proportions
FCI gives male heights of 42–48 cm and female heights of 40–46 cm, with a 2 cm tolerance above or below only for perfectly typed specimens. The earlier UK guide uses those ranges with a separately stated 2 cm tolerance. Neither supplies a numerical weight here. The body is longer than its height, with a short, slightly arched loin that can look more pronounced beneath thick rear coat.
Long and semi-long textures
FCI describes dense, almost flat or slightly waved hair, coarser and woollier around the croup and thighs. In some dogs, mixed textures form cadenettes or overlapping felted matelotes in specified areas. The UK description also recognises this possibility. These are features of particular long-coat textures, not instructions to produce cords everywhere or to transfer the same finish to the Smooth Faced variety.
A maintainable routine
The shared AKC Pyrenean Shepherd page suggests weekly brushing, ear cleaning and nail trimming, and discusses combed-out or corded coats. For this long-haired profile, ask a breed-experienced person to explain the appropriate approach to the actual coat and any naturally forming strands. The UK category is grooming more than weekly. Neither account supplies a detailed universal cord-maintenance method or a fixed bath or clipping interval.
Daily time and alternatives
The UK exercise category is up to an hour daily, with a small house and small or medium garden. AKC describes plentiful activity and shared challenges without a numerical minimum. Consider the daily outings alongside regular coat handling. Compare the separate Smooth Faced profile for its more square body and regional hair lengths, or the Catalan Sheepdog for its own rough coat and two-stage moult.
