Manchester Terrier: a close coat and a simple weekly routine

The Manchester Terrier has a short body, a slight arch over the loin and a close, glossy coat. Its UK profile and FCI size guidance remain distinct from the US care guide’s Standard Manchester label.

The profile and dimensions

FCI ideal height is 41 cm for males and 38 cm for females, matching the earlier UK description. No numeric weight range is supplied. The body is short with well-sprung ribs and a tuck-up behind the ribcage.

The coat is close, smooth, short and glossy, with a firm texture. The linked AKC care guide uses the US Standard Manchester Terrier label; the height figures here come from the FCI and earlier UK descriptions.

A weekly wipe and smaller maintenance jobs

The UK overview lists weekly grooming. AKC care advice describes a weekly damp towel or hound glove, an occasional bath with dog shampoo, nail care every couple of weeks and regular ear maintenance. Ask for advice if cleaning the ears is needed.

That is a different workload from maintaining a stripped or long coat, while still leaving regular handling to organise. Discuss dental care with your veterinarian as part of the individual dog’s routine.

Walks and play

The UK guide lists up to one hour of daily exercise, a small house, small or medium garden and either town or country. AKC describes a couple of good walks each day and opportunities for ball play and active play with the owner.

Consider the walks and play space available on an ordinary working day. Adapt the workload to age and condition and check the practical outdoor arrangements, rather than assuming a small-home category supplies an exercise plan.

Compare close and harsh coats

Smooth Fox Terriers have their own hard, dense coat and different height and weight wording. Australian Terriers have a harsh double coat with a neck ruff and a lower desirable height. Compare those coat tasks and dimensions separately; a similar small scale does not make the breeds interchangeable.
