Neapolitan Mastiff: a short coat with everyday face care

The Neapolitan Mastiff has a heavy, elongated body and very short hair. Routine care includes drying the face and lips, with gentle attention to the eyes and ears. Activity needs to account for age, warm weather and the dog’s substantial build.

Different size descriptions remain separate

The FCI gives males 65–75 cm and 60–70 kg, females 60–68 cm and 50–60 kg. The earlier UK guide lists 65–75 cm and 50–70 kg with some tolerance and females smaller, rather than supplying the same separate sex-specific ranges.

The FCI body length exceeds height by 15%, with a broad, straight back. Hair is hard, dense and uniform, no longer than 1.5 cm, with no feathering. That short surface coat leaves the face-cleaning job plainly visible.

Keep a towel beside the routine

The AKC describes occasional baths, eyes and ears checked and gently cleaned when necessary, and short nails. It specifically suggests keeping a towel for drying the face and lips after eating or drinking. These smaller daily jobs are separate from a full bath.

The UK category is weekly grooming. Use the session to handle the feet and look over the short coat as well as checking the face; ask for a demonstration if gentle cleaning around the eyes or ears is unfamiliar.

Warm weather and growing dogs

The UK exercise category is up to one hour, with a large country house and garden. The AKC cautions about warm-weather exertion, sharp turns and young dogs playing beyond tiredness. It also highlights stairs and jumping down during growth. Plan controlled opportunities to move and play, with pauses that suit the dog and conditions.

Compare the care around the face

The Dogue de Bordeaux has fine, soft hair and more detailed wrinkle-drying and bathing guidance. The Mastiff’s coat is coarser over the shoulders, with a separate brush-and-comb routine. Their large bodies do not establish a shared cleaning or exercise timetable.
