Norwich Terrier: upright ears above a wiry neck ruff
The Norwich Terrier’s FCI description is low, compact and strong, with a short back and good substance for its size. Upright, pointed ears frame the top of the head. Its hard, straight, wiry outer coat lies close over thick undercoat, with longer neck hair forming a ruff.
The Norfolk comparison starts at the ears
The Norfolk’s ears fold forward against the cheeks, while the Norwich’s ears stand erect when attentive. Both have a short-backed outline, but the shared height ideal does not make them one breed. The Cairn offers another upright-eared comparison, with a medium-length back and an outer coat that may have a slight wave.
The Norwich’s head and ears have shorter, smoother hair than its neck ruff. These changes in length across the coat matter more than calling all three breeds simply medium-coated.
Preserving the wiry finish takes a plan
AKC’s Norwich care guide recommends regular grooming and learning hand-stripping or finding a groomer who does it. It explains that clipping cuts the coloured hair tips and changes the coat’s color and texture. If you want to retain the wiry finish, ask a groomer about the difference between removing dead hair and cutting the coat.
The earlier UK guide lists grooming more than once a week, alongside up to one hour of daily exercise. AKC separately recommends regular activity, with a leash for walks or a securely fenced place to exercise.
Small measurements, practical comparisons
The earlier UK home entry is a flat or apartment, with a small or medium garden in town or country. Norfolk and Cairn share those broad categories, so compare the grooming work and places available for outings as well.
The FCI ideal height is 25 cm, with no numeric weight. Norfolk has the same height ideal; its folded ears are the clearest starting point for comparison with the upright-eared Norwich.
