Old English Sheepdog: reaching through the full coat
The Old English Sheepdog’s shaggy outline covers a compact, strong body. A full coat involves deliberate work down to the skin, while a shorter pet trim changes the amount of hair without ending the grooming obligation. Plan the routine around the finish you will actually maintain.
Body and minimum height
FCI describes a gently rising topline, lower at the withers than the loin, and a pear-shaped body viewed from above. Both FCI and the earlier UK guide give minimum heights of 61 cm for males and 56 cm for females, with type and proportion mattering more than size alone. Neither gives a numerical weight here.
Full coat versus pet trim
The outer coat is harsh and shaggy rather than curly, with substantial undercoat. The UK standard favours a natural outline rather than a scissored show shape. AKC care guidance separately discusses a pet puppy trim as a practical choice. A pet haircut is not a change to the breed-standard coat description, and a shorter finish does not establish that the dog can go unchecked between grooming appointments.
The work between appointments
For a full coat, AKC recommends thoroughly brushing the entire dog to the skin at least weekly. Shorter pet coats still need routine brushing between baths and cuts, with regular nail care. Learn how to part the hair and check beneath the surface with an experienced groomer. A quick pass over the back does not cover the whole dog, especially when the visible top layer looks tidy.
Time for activity too
The UK category is more than two hours of daily exercise and daily grooming, with a large house and garden in either town or country. AKC notes individual variation in exercise needs while describing daily activity. Coat work is an additional commitment, not a substitute for those outings. Compare the Briard’s long coat and the Polish Lowland Sheepdog’s smaller rectangular body to weigh both the amount of hair and the regular handling involved.
