Pointer: a smooth coat with a substantial exercise commitment

The Pointer has a strong, supple outline and fine, short hair with a clear sheen. Weekly coat care is relatively simple; daily exercise is the larger time commitment. Ear, nail and dental care still belong in the routine despite the absence of long feathering.

Height and flowing body lines

Both FCI and the earlier UK guide give shoulder heights of 63–69 cm for males and 61–66 cm for females, described as desirable heights in the UK text. Neither supplies numerical weight in these sections.

The body is short-coupled, with well-sprung ribs carried back towards strong, slightly arched loins. Hair is fine, short, hard and smooth rather than silky feathering or wire. Assess the frame and proportions rather than expecting extra coat to fill out the outline.

A soft brush or hound glove

The AKC recommends weekly brushing with a soft bristle brush or hound glove to remove dirt and loose hair. The UK guide also uses a weekly grooming category. Small sessions can help keep the coat manageable without needing the tools used for a long or wiry coat.

The AKC includes regular ear checks and cleaning when needed, frequent nail trimming if the nails do not wear down, and tooth brushing with dog toothpaste. Ask your vet about a suitable ear-cleaning product rather than choosing one only because it is used on another breed.

Make room for vigorous shared activity

The UK exercise category exceeds two hours daily, with a large house and garden in town or country. The AKC suggests long walks, vigorous play and a securely fenced running area, with tracking, agility and other sports among possible activities. Having room outdoors is useful, but the guide also emphasises things done with the owner.

Compare other short coats

The Portuguese Pointer is shorter in its own height description and has a lower UK exercise category, with a rubber-curry brushing routine. The German Shorthaired Pointer has different UK and FCI heights and an AKC brush-every-few-days routine. Read those details rather than treating all dogs called pointers as one care plan.
