Portuguese Podengo: the small size and two coat routines
This guide follows the small Portuguese Podengo described in the UK entry, corresponding to the Pequeno size. Smooth and wire coats both belong in that comparison. A general Podengo name should not lead to using the dimensions or care description of the medium or large varieties for this small profile.
Small-size measurements and proportions
The earlier UK guide gives 20–30 cm and 4–5 kg. FCI gives the same height for its Small variety but a weight of 4–6 kg. Keep those weight ranges separate. FCI describes Small body length to height as 6:5, whereas the UK account says slightly longer than high. The medium and large varieties have their own proportions and size clauses; they are not extra limits for the Small dog.
Smooth and wire descriptions
UK describes a very dense, short smooth coat, while the rough, harsh wire coat is less dense, without undercoat and with a distinct beard. FCI describes both coat varieties without undercoat and also distinguishes the denser smooth coat from the bearded wire form. UK specifies a natural coat that is never trimmed. The two textures therefore need to remain visible when considering the work involved.
Different handling for each coat
AKC’s Portuguese Podengo Pequeno guide recommends routine brushing and then a comb for tangles in the wire coat, versus an occasional damp-cloth wipe for the smooth coat, between its suggested monthly baths. It says clipping or scissoring is not required, and recommends regular tooth brushing and nail clipping or grinding. Those are Pequeno-specific suggestions, not a routine borrowed from the medium or large Podengo. The earlier UK grooming category is weekly.
Daily activity and comparisons
UK lists up to 30 minutes of daily exercise, with a small house and small or medium garden in town or country. AKC describes brisk daily exercise, a vigorous walk or secure play, without setting a numerical minimum, and advises that loose running stays within safe fencing. The UK category is not a promise that half an hour meets every dog’s needs. Compare the Ridgeback’s larger measurements or the Basenji’s fine coat and separate weekly handling.
