Pug: weekly coat care plus the face, ears and teeth

The Pug has a compact, square body and short, soft hair. Loose-hair removal is only one part of routine care: the nose wrinkle, ears, nails and teeth also need attention. Daily moderate activity should account for the individual dog and the weather.

Ideal weight and a compact outline

Both FCI and earlier UK descriptions give ideal weight 6.3–8.1 kg, without numerical height. The body is short and cobby, with a level back, broad chest and well-sprung ribs. Substance is explicitly distinguished from excess weight.

The hair is fine, smooth, soft, short and glossy. The standard discourages trimming or stripping that changes its length, texture or outline. That short finish still sheds and should not be treated as a reason to skip regular coat attention.

A weekly brush and the smaller cleaning jobs

The AKC recommends weekly use of a medium-bristle brush, rubber grooming mitt or hound glove, with baths when needed and regular nail trimming. This matches the UK weekly grooming category while adding practical tool choices.

The Pug Dog Club of America’s 2017 owner leaflet also calls for regular cleaning of the deep nose wrinkle and ears, plus tooth brushing. Ask for a gentle cleaning demonstration if needed; this is a separate handling job from brushing the short body hair.

Moderate daily activity in suitable weather

The UK exercise category is up to one hour, with a flat or apartment and small or medium garden in either setting. The AKC suggests moderate walks or play and cautions against strenuous exercise in warm or humid weather. Plan timing and effort around the actual dog and conditions rather than treating an hour as a compulsory outing.

Compare the hands-on maintenance

The Miniature Pinscher has a different height-and-weight description and a soft-brush routine with regular dental care. The Pekingese has thick undercoat and a much larger brushing job. Similar home categories leave different coat layers, facial care and activity details to manage.
