Pyrenean Mountain Dog: long hair, loose undercoat and daily walks

The Pyrenean Mountain Dog has a strong, slightly long frame beneath a substantial double coat. Regular brushing removes loose hair even when the surface looks tidy. Daily shared activity and routine handling still need a place alongside the coat work.

Ranges, minimums and proportional weight

The FCI gives males 70–80 cm and females 65–75 cm, allowing 2 cm above only for perfectly typical specimens. The earlier UK guide instead gives minimum heights of 70 cm and 65 cm, with most dogs exceeding them.

The UK minimum weights of 50 kg and 40 kg apply to dogs at those minimum heights; taller dogs are described as proportionately heavier without excess fat. The FCI body is slightly longer than tall. Long outer hair lies over thick undercoat, with finer, woollier, dense hair on the breeches.

A full brush-through, not just the surface

The AKC recommends thorough pin-brush or slicker work at least weekly to remove loose hair. The earlier UK grooming category is more than once weekly. Leave room for regular checks and extra undercoat work when shedding makes the job larger.

The same care guide includes regular nail trimming and frequent tooth brushing using dog toothpaste. These handling tasks belong alongside the brush session rather than waiting until the dog happens to need a bath.

Walks with the owner

The UK exercise category is up to one hour, with a large house and garden in either setting. The AKC emphasises moderate activity such as walks with the owner. A guardian’s history of patrolling does not mean that leaving a dog to occupy a garden provides the whole daily routine.

Compare separate white-coated breeds

The Maremma has a different FCI size description and a breed-club emphasis on a purposeful working home. The Kuvasz carries wavier body hair with its own weekly-brushing advice. Compare the individual coat methods and home requirements rather than treating color or guardian history as a care plan.
