Rhodesian Ridgeback: the ridge, short-coat care and daily outings

The Rhodesian Ridgeback has a strong, muscular outline and a distinctive strip of hair growing in the opposite direction along its back. That ridge describes a coat feature, rather than proving a particular dog’s courage or working ability. Its everyday care still centres on the short coat, nails and shared outings.

Heights and weight guidance

FCI gives male heights of 63–69 cm and female heights of 61–66 cm, with weights of 36.5 kg and 32 kg respectively. UK describes 63/69 cm as desirable minimum and maximum male heights, with 61/66 cm for females, and supplies no numerical weight here. Keep that distinction between the two accounts. The deep chest is not excessively wide, with a powerful back and a strong, slightly arched loin.

Short hair and the ridge

The standards describe short, dense hair that looks sleek and glossy, neither woolly nor silky. FCI describes the ridge as clearly defined, symmetrical and tapering towards the haunch. It is formed by hair growing against the direction of the rest of the coat.

A weekly routine and nail handling

AKC recommends weekly brushing to remove loose hair, with an occasional bath. That aligns with the UK weekly grooming category while leaving the bath interval open. Nails need attention if they have not worn down naturally. AKC notes that some Ridgebacks respond more positively to a nail grinder than clipping; a demonstration can help establish comfortable handling for the individual dog. A short coat should not be taken to mean that those other tasks require no time.

Different activity descriptions

The UK category is more than two hours of daily exercise and lists a large house and garden in town or country. AKC describes moderate exercise through daily outings such as long walks and shared play, without an hourly prescription. Keep those descriptions separate when planning the actual routine. Compare the much smaller Portuguese Podengo’s two coat types, or the Polish Hunting Dog’s own UK size and exercise categories, using each profile’s separate care guidance.
