Rough Collie: reach the undercoat behind the feathering

The Rough Collie’s mane, frill and feathering cover a body slightly longer than tall. A full coat needs more than a surface brush, particularly behind the ears and elbows. Walks and play still belong in the day alongside that hands-on maintenance.

Height and the body under the coat

Both FCI and earlier UK descriptions give males 56–61 cm and females 51–56 cm at the shoulder. Neither supplies numerical weight here. The back is firm with a slight rise over the loin, and the chest is deep with well-sprung ribs.

Straight, harsh outer hair fits the outline over soft, very dense undercoat. The face is smooth, while the mane, frill, backs of the legs and tail carry much more hair. The UK medium-coat overview does not describe that grooming workload on its own.

The rough-coat part of the shared guide

The AKC Collie page explicitly distinguishes Rough and Smooth grooming. For Rough Collies it recommends weekly brushing down to the skin, paying particular attention to matting behind the ears and elbows and removing loose undercoat. More grooming is needed during shedding.

The earlier UK Rough Collie category is daily grooming. Allow for smaller checks between thorough brush-throughs rather than interpreting weekly advice as a reason to ignore a developing tangle. Ask a groomer to demonstrate how to part and work through the dense layer.

Exercise varies between individual dogs

The UK guide places exercise up to one hour, with a small house and large garden in town or country. The AKC describes variation between individuals and families of Collies, while recommending regular exercise, daily walks and opportunities to run or play in a fenced yard. Use that as a plan for involvement, not a guarantee that all dogs will have identical needs.

Compare coats on separate profiles

The Smooth Collie has a short harsh topcoat over dense undercoat, with a different UK grooming category. The Shetland Sheepdog is smaller in its own height description and has its own long-coat mat checks. Neither is simply the Rough Collie’s routine scaled by size or hair length.
