Russian Black Terrier: coat care and separate size ranges
The Russian Black Terrier is a large, substantial dog whose beard and trimmed outline can obscure the work involved in its double coat. Its own AKC guidance uses Black Russian Terrier. Start with the actual size and grooming commitment rather than assuming that the terrier name describes a small household dog.
Desired size and outer limits
FCI gives desired heights of 72–76 cm for males and 68–72 cm for females. Its stated lower and upper bounds are 70–78 cm and 66–74 cm, with slightly taller dogs allowed only when proportionate and of excellent type. Weights are 50–60 kg and 45–50 kg. The earlier UK guide instead gives 68–77 cm and 66–72 cm, without a numerical weight. Desired ranges and conditional allowances are different statements.
Body and coat texture
FCI describes a body slightly longer than its height, with a sloping topline and coarse, slightly waved outer hair over dense undercoat. The UK description is almost square with a level back and medium-textured coat. Keep those descriptions with their own standards. FCI’s natural outer-hair length of 5–15 cm is not an instruction to leave every body area at the same length.
Practical grooming
AKC suggests brushing once or twice weekly, clipping every few months and regular nail care. Learn facial and beard trimming from an experienced person or use a professional groomer. Its health section also supports ear checks and regular tooth brushing. The UK category is daily grooming, so allow ongoing inspection and handling between longer sessions; a tidy beard alone does not show that the undercoat has been worked through.
Daily time and comparisons
The UK exercise category exceeds two hours daily, while AKC mentions at least thirty or forty minutes of daily shared activity. These are different descriptions, not proof that one short outing fulfils every individual’s needs. The UK home categories are a large house and garden in town or country. Compare the Bouvier and Giant Schnauzer using their own coats and measurements, including the work through the undercoat and the handling needed between appointments.
