Samoyed: a full polar coat and daily shared activity

The Samoyed’s full ruff and tail sit over a body slightly longer than tall. Daily brushing is a real part of ownership, including outside the heaviest shedding periods. Long leashed walks and play together also take regular time alongside the coat work.

Build and two height descriptions

The FCI gives ideal shoulder heights of 57 cm for males and 53 cm for females, each with 3 cm tolerance. The earlier UK guide lists 51–56 cm for males and 46–51 cm for females. It relates weight to height without a numerical range; the FCI section also gives no kilogram figure.

The FCI body length is about 5% greater than shoulder height. A longer, harsh, straight outer coat covers short, soft, dense undercoat. The UK description distinguishes harsh hair from wiry texture. The ruff is especially marked in males, while females may have a shorter, softer coat.

Daily brushing and the heavier shed

The AKC guide recommends daily brushing to remove dirt and loose hair. Use a slicker or metal comb for tangles rather than only passing over the ruff. It describes ongoing shedding with a heavier undercoat change once or twice a year, so keep a little time available every day and more when needed.

It suggests nail trimming every three or four weeks, adjusted to need. The guide also recommends frequent tooth brushing with toothpaste made for dogs. Arrange these smaller care jobs alongside grooming instead of letting the large coat consume the whole routine.

Exercise with company and secure space

The earlier UK guide places exercise above two hours, with a large house and garden in the country. The AKC suggests long walks on lead and shared play in a safely fenced yard, warning that a loose Samoyed may travel far. The practical commitment is both an outing plan and an enclosure you can rely on.

Compare the coat as well as the frame

The Malamute is more substantial in its heavy-freighting description and has coarse guard hair over woolly undercoat. The Siberian Husky has a more moderate outline and smoother-lying hair, with weekly rather than daily brushing in its own AKC guide outside shedding. All three need substantial daily activity, but their coat routines differ.
