Schipperke: a small body with a seasonal coat workload

The Schipperke’s dense coat forms a characteristic ruff, mane and furnishings around a short, sturdy body. Its small size does not remove the need for daily activity or extra brushing during shedding. The UK and FCI weight descriptions also use different ranges and qualifications.

Weight and body proportions

FCI gives a weight range of 3–9 kg, with an average weight of 4–7 kg sought after. The earlier UK guide describes about 5.5–7.5 kg. Neither supplies a numerical height here. FCI describes a square, short and broad body, with a straight, firm back and pronounced withers. Keep the desired average separate from the broader range rather than turning them into one new weight limit.

A distinctive double coat

The outer coat is abundant, straight and harsh, supported by soft, thick undercoat. Shorter hair on the head and legs contrasts with the longer ruff, mane, chest frill and thigh furnishings. Those different lengths give the outline without requiring a decorative haircut. Include the thicker areas when checking through the coat rather than brushing only the flat hair along the back.

Ordinary weeks and shedding

AKC suggests weekly brushing, with more frequent attention during shedding once or twice yearly, plus regular nail trimming. The earlier UK category is grooming more than weekly. Plan additional handling when loose undercoat begins to build up, and ask for a demonstration if you are unfamiliar with this texture. The sources do not provide a universal stripping or monthly bathing programme to follow.

Making time for activity

The UK guide places exercise at up to an hour daily and includes flat or apartment living with a small or medium garden. AKC describes a brisk daily walk and play in secure space. Include shared activity as well as time indoors. Compare the larger Canaan Dog and Korean Jindo for their own measurements and coat routines; a similar upright-eared silhouette does not mean the same amount of hair or handling.
