Scottish Terrier: a long-looking head and substantial, short-backed body
The Scottish Terrier’s FCI description combines short legs with a thick-set body and a head that looks long for the dog’s size. The back is proportionately short and muscular, beneath a level topline. Its close double coat has a harsh, dense, wiry outer layer over short, soft, dense undercoat.
Three terriers, three useful outlines
The Cairn has a medium-length back and a coat that may show a slight wave. The Westie has a compact body and white outer hair about 5 cm long, without curl. The Scottie’s own colors include black, wheaten and brindle, but color alone does not explain its substantial frame and head proportions.
Stripping and clipping are different grooming choices
AKC’s Scottish Terrier care guide prefers hand-stripping for the harsh coat, while explicitly accepting clipping when that is the practical option for a pet. It notes that clipping changes texture and describes a six- to eight-week schedule for maintaining a clipped coat.
The guide also recommends a weekly brush and comb-out. The earlier UK guide lists daily grooming, so the sources do not give an identical routine. Discuss the coat finish you want and the time and appointments involved in maintaining it.
Allow time for activity as well as coat care
The earlier UK guide lists up to one hour of daily exercise, a small house and a small or medium garden, in town or country. AKC’s activity examples combine walks with play, such as chasing a ball or toy. These give practical ways to spend time together alongside the grooming commitment.
The FCI height range is 25–28 cm and weight 8.5–10.5 kg. The Cairn’s approximate height and lower ideal weight offer a useful frame-size comparison without assuming every small terrier has the same build.
