Shar Pei: harsh coat, folds and regular ear care

The Shar Pei has a compact, square body with a short, harsh coat and no undercoat. Brushing the hair is only part of its upkeep: the skin folds and ears need their own attention. Keep those tasks distinct from the facial-fold care described for a Bulldog.

Height, coat and adult outline

FCI gives 44–51 cm at the withers, while the earlier UK guide gives 46–51 cm. Neither provides a numerical weight here. FCI describes coat length of 1–2.5 cm; UK distinguishes shorter bristly hair under 1.25 cm and a longer harsh coat up to 2.5 cm. Both favour an untrimmed coat. Moderate adult wrinkling at the shoulders and tail base is different from excessive loose skin over the whole body.

Skin folds and brushing

PDSA’s own Shar Pei guidance supports weekly brushing and keeping the folds clean and dry. It describes cleaning with a damp cotton wool pad and drying thoroughly afterwards. Ask a veterinarian to demonstrate suitable handling if the skin is irritated or you are unsure about the folds. The useful task is gentle cleaning and drying, rather than applying a shared chemical recipe to every wrinkled breed.

Ears, nails and bathing

AKC suggests weekly ear cleaning and nail attention, ideally with a grinder for nails. Have a professional demonstrate appropriate ear care; its advice specifically avoids cotton swabs and hydrogen peroxide. For bathing, AKC suggests roughly monthly, whereas PDSA says baths are often unnecessary. Discuss the interval for the individual coat and skin rather than combining these accounts into a compulsory schedule.

Daily activity and comparisons

The UK category is up to an hour of exercise daily, with a small house and small or medium garden. AKC describes individual variation, from several short walks to a more active routine. Consider those outings alongside regular skin and ear checks. Compare the Bulldog and Boston Terrier profiles for their own measurements and care; a short coat and prominent facial features do not make their maintenance identical.
