Skye Terrier: a long, straight coat and careful puppy activity

The Skye Terrier’s long, low body and straight-falling coat create a distinctive outline. Regular combing and a suitable activity plan matter more than the impression that a long coat must always need clipping.

Keep the length measurements separate

FCI describes a body twice as long as high. Its ideal height is 25–26 cm, with females slightly smaller in the same proportions. The separate 105 cm measurement runs from nose tip to tail tip; it is not the body length used in the height proportion. No numeric weight range is given.

The coat has short, close, soft, woolly undercoat and a hard, straight, flat outer layer without curl. Hair over the forehead and eyes should not obscure vision, and the coat should not impede movement.

Brush, comb and avoid scrubbing the coat

The UK overview lists grooming more than once weekly. AKC care guidance describes weekly brushing and combing with a soft or pin brush and a long-toothed comb, keeping the coat natural without clipping or scissoring.

It gives nail care every couple of weeks to a month, at least weekly ear checks and bathing as needed, usually monthly. During shampooing it advises against scrubbing, which can tangle the coat. Ask a groomer to demonstrate the routine and how to work through the longer hair.

An age-appropriate daily plan

The UK guide lists up to one hour of exercise, a small house, small or medium garden and either town or country. AKC describes short daily outings and shared play. Its health guidance cautions against excessive stairs or jumps onto hard surfaces for puppies.

Discuss a growing-dog plan with a veterinarian and choose manageable walks and play for the individual dog. The breed’s long body should not be used to invent a fixed exercise timetable.

Compare low outlines and coat texture

Dandie Dinmont Terriers have a curving topline and crisp outer coat, rather than the Skye’s straight outer layer. Australian Terriers have a much shorter harsh coat and a ruff. Compare the actual grooming demonstrations and measurements before deciding which routine you can maintain.
