Smooth Collie: short outer hair still covers dense undercoat

The Smooth Collie has a clear outline, a slightly long body and a short harsh outer coat. Regular maintenance still matters because the dense undercoat sheds. The shorter finish changes the grooming job, rather than removing it from the week.

Height, weight and a firm back

The FCI and earlier UK guide give shoulder heights of 56–61 cm for males and 51–56 cm for females, with weights of 20.5–29.5 kg and 18–25 kg respectively. The back is firm and level with a slight rise over the loin.

The body is slightly longer than tall. Short, flat outer hair has a harsh texture and very dense undercoat. The FCI description calls for the coat to be neither trimmed nor clipped; this presentation rule is separate from brushing loose undercoat out.

Use the smooth-coat advice

The shared AKC Collie guide specifically says Smooth Collies still require regular grooming and undercoat removal during shedding. Its down-to-skin mat-prevention routine belongs to the Rough-coat section; the Smooth advice focuses on regular maintenance and removing shedding undercoat.

The earlier UK Smooth Collie guide uses weekly grooming. Keep that regular check in the diary and allow more time as the undercoat loosens. A short, neat outer coat can hide the amount of loose hair beneath it.

A daily shared routine

The UK exercise category is up to one hour, with a small house and large garden in either town or country. The AKC emphasises individual variation alongside regular walks, aerobic activity and fenced play. The category is not a one-hour minimum; plan outings and games around the actual dog.

Compare the time behind different coats

The Rough Collie has a long frill and feathering, with a UK daily grooming category and specific mat checks behind ears and elbows. The Australian Shepherd has a medium-length coat with seasonal rake work every two or three days in its care guide and a higher UK exercise category. Compare the full week rather than the outline alone.
