Tibetan Spaniel: a natural coat with feathering to check

The Tibetan Spaniel has a small body slightly longer than its height, with a silky outer coat and fine, dense undercoat. Its naturally maintained coat needs particular attention behind the ears and around the fringes. It has its own care routine, separate from the Lhasa Apso and Tibetan Terrier.

Approximate height and ideal weight

FCI describes a height of about 25.4 cm and an ideal weight of 4.1–6.8 kg. The earlier UK guide uses about 25 cm and an ideal weight of 4–7 kg. Those are separately rounded descriptions, rather than a new combined range. A level back and well-sprung ribs form the slightly elongated outline, with furnishing hair adding volume without changing the body proportions.

Keeping the natural outline

AKC advises against trimming the coat apart from hair beneath the feet for cleanliness. It specifically advises owners to discuss avoiding a routine sanitary cut on the belly or between the legs when using a groomer. The silky body coat, feathered ears and furnished tail should not automatically receive the puppy-cut approach sometimes chosen for a different long-coated breed.

Where to comb

AKC recommends frequent combing behind the ears and regular attention to the rear fringes, with brushing and bathing to maintain the coat. During shedding, a bath and conditioning can help; there is no fixed bathing interval in that guidance. Introduce regular nail handling while young. The UK grooming category is more than weekly, so plan hands-on checks between fuller sessions rather than relying only on a salon visit.

Outings and alternatives

The UK guide lists up to an hour of daily exercise and flat or apartment living with a small or medium garden. AKC describes daily walks and activity in secure space. Include shared outings alongside the coat checks. Compare the Lhasa Apso’s harder, heavier coat and its specific washing routine, or the Tibetan Terrier’s woollier undercoat, before choosing on the basis of a regional name or a flowing show outline.
