Toy Poodle: a small outline with a full grooming commitment

The Toy Poodle has the dense curly coat of the Poodle in a small outline. The UK Toy height description and FCI’s Toy clause have different endpoints, and neither makes the coat look after itself. Decide how much daily grooming you can manage before choosing a full or shorter finish.

Height endpoints matter

The earlier UK guide says under 28 cm at the shoulder. The FCI family’s nominal Toy clause says over 24 up to 28 cm, with a sought-after ideal of 25 cm and a separately stated lower tolerance of 1 cm. Its additional height rules are not a new UK range. FCI also has a Medium category alongside Standard and Miniature; there is no exact three-to-four-class conversion based on familiar names alone.

Coat and a manageable finish

UK describes a profuse, dense coat with close curls, allowing traditional show trims while enough hair remains to demonstrate quality and color. AKC’s own Toy page discusses a full coat versus a shorter pet trim. That practical choice concerns how much curly hair you will brush and comb; it should not be confused with FCI’s separately described intentionally corded presentation.

Daily work and appointments

For a full coat, AKC advises daily brushing and combing all the way to the skin, where hidden tangles can form. It describes professional appointments every four to six weeks for bathing, grooming and nails as a common pet arrangement. Discuss bathing according to the chosen trim and the dog’s surroundings. Ask for a demonstration of the between-visit routine at the length chosen for your dog.

Activity in a small home

The UK guide lists flat or apartment living, a small or medium garden, daily grooming and up to an hour of exercise. AKC emphasises good daily activity for Poodles of any size through shared walks and play. Include that time alongside the grooming commitment. Compare the Miniature and Standard profiles for their own height descriptions and home categories, rather than assuming that a Toy label describes a dog needing only indoor activity.
