Cardigan Welsh Corgi: a long frame with regular coat and nail care

The Cardigan has a long, low body and a fox-like tail. Its hard outer coat covers good undercoat, so brushing remains a regular task. Shared walks and play also matter; small stature is not a reason to leave daily activity out of the plan.

An ideal height rather than a weight range

Both FCI and earlier UK descriptions give an ideal shoulder height of 30 cm. Weight is proportional to size, with overall balance the main consideration, rather than a numerical kilogram range. The body is fairly long and strong with a level topline.

The coat is short or medium, hard and preferably straight over undercoat. The historical nose-to-tail measurement in the UK account includes the tail; it should not be used as a body-length ratio or a size target for an individual dog.

Brush the coat and check the feet

The AKC recommends brushing at least weekly, keeping nails trimmed and tidying long hair beneath the feet. The earlier UK grooming category is more than once weekly. Plan regular checks as well as a fuller brush-through, especially when loose hair is coming out.

The AKC guide cautions against unnecessary summer shortening and overexposure to hot sun. Discuss the coat with a groomer and plan shaded, suitable outings rather than assuming a shorter cut solves heat exposure.

Walks, play and managing jumps

The UK exercise category is up to one hour, with a small house and small or medium garden in town or country. The AKC suggests neighbourhood walks, hikes or ball play. Its own Exercise and Health guidance warns about jumps and stairs, particularly jumping down from beds or sofas; plan access around the home with that advice in mind.

Compare the two Corgis separately

The Pembroke has an approximate 25–30 cm height description and numerical weights, with a different daily comb-and-slicker routine. The taller Smooth Collie has short harsh hair over dense undercoat. Compare handling, daily outings and grooming methods alongside the body dimensions.
