Welsh Springer Spaniel: red and white with light ear feathering

The Welsh Springer Spaniel’s FCI description is compact and balanced, without a leggy outline. Its strong, muscular body is not long. The dense coat is silky and straight or flat, with red and white as the standard’s color combination. Wiry, wavy or curly hair does not fit that description.

Feathering varies across the body

The legs above the hocks have moderate feathering, while the ears and tail carry lighter feathering. The English Springer also has a close, straight coat, but its standard gives different colors and a taller-legged outline.

The Sussex makes a more striking color and texture comparison: golden liver body hair, ample undercoat and softer, wavy hair on the ears. Similar UK coat-length categories do not make these details interchangeable.

Put the exercise entry next to the house entry

The earlier UK guide pairs a small house with a large garden, more than two hours of daily exercise and grooming more than once a week. It covers town or country. The English Springer shares those entries, while the Sussex location entry is country.

Use the older guide as a way to compare the time and space available, rather than taking the home category alone as a promise that a particular dog will suit it.

A brush, a comb and time together

AKC’s Welsh Springer care guide recommends at least weekly grooming, using a soft brush and a slicker brush or metal comb to ease developing tangles apart. It also describes regular bathing and nail trimming. That gives practical substance to the older UK grooming category without turning a neat coat into a promise of low maintenance.

For activity, its suggestions include long daily walks and shared play in a securely fenced garden. Those shared activities are practical options to consider when planning your day, without assuming a particular dog’s behavior or household fit.

Separate approximate heights for males and females

The FCI standard gives approximately 48 cm for males and 46 cm for females, with no numeric weight. Those separate figures differ from the English Springer’s single approximate 51 cm height. They are not presented as exact limits or interchangeable Springer measurements.
