Intermediate Xoloitzcuintle: coat type and exposed-skin care

The Intermediate Xoloitzcuintle has a body slightly longer than its height and can be hairless or coated. The two forms need different attention during grooming. This profile follows the UK Intermediate size, while the common AKC Xolo care page covers the wider breed family and uses its own size names.

Intermediate height and outline

Both the earlier UK guide and FCI give 36–45 cm for the Intermediate, with a body-length-to-height proportion around 10:9. The back is firm and level above a deep chest. Neither supplies a numerical weight here. The Miniature and Standard profiles have their own height ranges; an American size name should not be used as a direct substitute for the UK Intermediate label.

Hairless and coated forms

The hairless form can have short coarse tufts on the head, neck, feet and tail rather than being completely bare. The coated form has a short, flat, close coat without undercoat. The UK description treats hair longer than 2.5 cm as undesirable. These are descriptions of the two forms, not a reason to give both the same brushing routine or to overlook the exposed skin.

A practical care routine

AKC recommends occasional brushing for coated dogs, regular weekly grooming and occasional bathing, with regular nail trimming. Its hairless guidance highlights sun protection during prolonged direct exposure and notes that young skin can need particular attention. Discuss suitable sun protection or skin changes with a veterinarian rather than adopting a human acne or lotion programme. Include the regular ear checks and frequent tooth brushing with dog toothpaste described in its practical health guidance.

Activity and size comparisons

The UK category is up to an hour of exercise daily, weekly grooming and a small house with a small or medium garden. AKC describes long walks and lively shared play. Plan both outings and the care appropriate to the actual coat. Compare the Miniature and Standard heights while keeping their shared body proportions and separate UK home categories in view.
