Australian Cattle Dog: a short coat and a substantial activity plan

The Australian Cattle Dog has a compact, muscular frame and a close double coat. Ordinary brushing is straightforward, but seasonal undercoat removal adds work. The larger daily commitment is shared activity that gives the dog something to do, rather than simply access to a garden.

A slightly longer-than-tall frame

Both the FCI and earlier UK description give shoulder heights of 46–51 cm for males and 43–48 cm for females. Neither supplies a numerical weight here. Body length to height is 10:9, with a level back, strong loin and deep, moderately broad chest.

The outer coat is straight, hard and flat over short, dense undercoat. Average body hair is 2.5–4 cm, with a little more length around the neck and behind the thighs. A short overall outline still contains a layer that sheds.

Weekly brushing changes during shedding

The AKC guide recommends a quick weekly brush and occasional baths. During the twice-yearly undercoat shed, it calls for a thorough brush-out every few days with a short-bristle brush and possibly a comb. Plan that extra time before loose hair starts collecting around the house.

Regular nail trimming, ear checks for foreign material or wax, and tooth brushing belong in the same care plan. These smaller jobs are worth including in the coat session even when the outer hair looks clean.

Shared exercise and a useful task

The earlier UK guide places exercise above two hours daily, with a small house and small or medium garden in the country. The AKC describes a quick walk and yard play as insufficient by themselves, suggesting running with the owner or activities such as agility and obedience. Those are possible outlets to explore, not a promise that every dog will suit every sport.

Compare the routine behind the coat

The Australian Shepherd has longer body hair and a different seasonal rake-and-brush routine. The larger Beauceron also has a close double coat, with daily brushing during shedding and rear double-dewclaw care. Similar working backgrounds do not make their size or grooming jobs identical.
