Bernese Mountain Dog: long hair and seasonal brush-outs

The Bernese Mountain Dog has a substantial frame under long, straight or slightly wavy hair. Weekly maintenance becomes a daily job during shedding. Plan time for that coat work alongside moderate daily outings and handling a large dog.

Size beneath the long coat

The FCI gives males 64–70 cm at the shoulder, ideal 66–68 cm, and females 58–66 cm, ideal 60–63 cm. The earlier UK guide gives the same overall ranges without those narrower ideals or a numerical weight.

Height to body length is 9:10, favouring a compact rather than elongated outline. The back is firm and level, with a broad, deep chest reaching the elbows. Long outer hair may be straight or slightly wavy; the AKC care guide describes a woolly undercoat.

Allow extra time during shedding

The AKC recommends weekly brushing, increasing to daily in the twice-yearly shedding periods. A slicker brush or metal comb can work through tangles. The UK category is grooming more than once weekly, so leave room for shorter checks between full sessions.

The same guide includes regular nail trimming, ear checks and frequent tooth brushing with dog toothpaste. A coat session is a useful opportunity to handle the feet and check the ears as well as removing loose hair.

Daily outings and indoor companionship

The UK exercise category is up to one hour, with a large house and garden in town or country. The AKC suggests at least half an hour of moderate daily exercise, with walks or hikes among the options. These are differently framed guides; plan outings around the individual dog rather than treating either as a guaranteed sufficient dose.

Compare the Swiss coats

The Great Swiss Mountain Dog has a shorter outer coat but still needs seasonal undercoat removal. The smaller Entlebucher has a close, harsh double coat and a more energetic exercise description in its own care guide. Tricolour markings do not make their daily routines interchangeable.
