Bolognese: a fluffy white coat on a square frame

The Bolognese is small, stocky and compact in its FCI description, with body length equal to height. Long white flocks stand away from the body rather than lying flat against it; hair is shorter on the muzzle. The coat creates a different silhouette from the Bichon Frise’s loose curls or the Coton’s longer body.

Natural presentation and a shorter pet coat

The earlier UK description presents the Bolognese in a natural, untrimmed coat, and its grooming category is daily. AKC’s own care guide also discusses maintaining the full coat, but describes a shorter pet option of about one inch for easier upkeep, leaving more hair around the face.

Ask a groomer which length you can maintain and how often it will need attention. AKC also includes regular grooming, occasional bathing and routine nail care.

Small spaces still need an activity plan

The earlier UK guide lists up to 30 minutes of exercise, a flat or apartment and a small or medium garden, in town or country. The Bichon and Coton have the same broad entries, despite their different coats and proportions.

AKC’s Bolognese activity examples include walks, fenced-garden play, hide-and-seek and rolling a ball along the floor. These provide options for activity inside and outside the home alongside time for grooming.

Compare the frame, not just the fluff

FCI heights are 27–30 cm for males and 25–28 cm for females, with a weight of 2.5–4 kg. The Coton’s height-to-body-length ratio is 2:3, while the Bolognese is square. Looking at those proportions alongside the coat makes a more useful comparison than calling both simply small white dogs.
