Border Terrier: a narrow frame beneath a harsh coat

The Border Terrier’s FCI description gives it a deep, narrow, fairly long body, with a harsh, dense coat over close undercoat. An otter-like head and small V-shaped ears that drop against the cheeks make it recognisable beyond its size. These details produce a different outline from the Cairn’s upright ears or the Scottish Terrier’s longer-looking head and short back.

Short hair still has a coat-care season

The earlier UK guide puts the Border in the short-coat category, with grooming more than once a week. AKC’s own care advice suggests brushing every week or two outside shedding periods, with more work removing dead hair when the coat sheds. These are different routines from two sources, rather than one fixed schedule. A short coat should therefore not be mistaken for an unchanging amount of grooming throughout the year.

AKC suggests that a towel and brush will often clean up a dirty Border, rather than routinely bathing it. Its discussion of stripping concerns removing dead coat. Routine brushing and seasonal coat work are different tasks to allow time for.

Plan outdoor time as well as indoor space

The earlier UK entries are up to one hour of daily exercise, a flat or apartment, and a small or medium garden, in town or country. The Cairn has the same broad exercise and home categories, while the Scottish Terrier’s home entry is a small house.

AKC suggests brisk walks and shared ball or disc play, with walks on a leash and play in a secure enclosure. Tracking and agility are among its optional activity examples. Consider where those outings and games can happen, rather than treating the apartment label as a complete care plan.

Weight figures without a height range

The FCI weights are 5.9–7.1 kg for males and 5.1–6.4 kg for females. No numeric height is stated. The Cairn’s separate approximate height and ideal weight provide a useful comparison, but are not missing Border measurements.
