Borzoi: tall proportions and a coat that needs attention
The Borzoi pairs a tall, slightly elongated body with a long, supple coat. The practical comparison is not just height: consider how regular brushing, heavier shedding periods and access to secure exercise will fit into the week.
Shape and coat
The FCI standard describes a tall, lean but strong dog, slightly longer than high, with females relatively longer than males. The back and loin form a smooth arch, more pronounced in males. That outline differs from a square body or a uniformly straight topline.
The coat may be wavy or form large curls; small curls are also allowed. Hair is shorter on the head, ears and inner limbs, with longer hair over the back and neck and feathering on the chest, belly, rear legs and tail. A single medium-length coat label cannot explain all those areas.
What regular grooming means
The UK guide lists grooming more than once a week. AKC care advice is more specific: brush every day or two with appropriate tools such as a pin brush, slicker or comb. Heavier annual shedding calls for extra grooming. Regular bathing and nail care remain part of maintenance.
Before choosing a Borzoi, account for time to work through the longer coat as well as the practical task of keeping a tall dog comfortable during grooming. A brush occasionally passed over the surface is a different commitment from the routine described by the care guide.
Walking and running arrangements
The earlier UK category is up to one hour of exercise daily, with a large house, large garden and country setting. AKC describes long walks and running in a securely fenced yard, with a leash or enclosure for exercise. Lure coursing and agility are possible activities to explore rather than requirements for every household.
The UK category does not mean a Borzoi needs no opportunity to run. Check the actual walking routes and enclosed space available to you before relying on garden size alone.
Height and alternatives
FCI desirable height is 75–85 cm for males and 68–78 cm for females, without a numeric weight range. The earlier UK description instead gives minimum heights of 74 cm and 68 cm. Keep the minimum and desirable range distinct.
Compare the Afghan Hound for a different long-coat workload, or the Deerhound for a harsh, shaggy coat and a larger-boned outline. Neither comparison can be settled by the shared hound label.
