Canaan Dog: a seasonal double coat and daily outings

The Canaan Dog has a strong, square body covered by harsh outer hair and softer undercoat. Its regular coat work changes during shedding, so a routine that suits an ordinary week may need extra time when loose undercoat is coming away. Shared daily activity belongs alongside that practical care.

Size and body

Both FCI and the earlier UK guide give 50–60 cm at the withers and 18–25 kg. FCI notes that males can be considerably larger than females without dividing those figures into separate numerical ranges. Well-developed withers, a level back and muscular loin form the square outline. These measurements describe the standard, while the actual dog’s condition still needs individual assessment.

Ordinary weeks and shedding

The outer coat is dense, harsh and straight, short to medium in length, with close undercoat. The earlier UK grooming category is weekly. AKC says shedding occurs at least once yearly and recommends more frequent brushing during that period to remove loose hair. It describes relatively infrequent bathing and regular nail trimming when nails do not wear naturally. There is no fixed monthly bathing or stripping programme in that guidance.

Other regular handling

AKC’s practical health guidance supports regular ear checks and frequent tooth brushing with toothpaste made for dogs. Fit those tasks into handling alongside coat and nail checks. The short-looking outer coat should not obscure the softer undercoat or the extra work during shedding. Ask for a demonstration of working through that layer rather than judging the whole coat only from the hair visible on the back.

Daily time and comparisons

The UK guide lists up to an hour of daily exercise, a large house and small or medium garden in town or country. AKC describes moderate activity and daily outings, with shared activities as additional options. The Korean Jindo has its own coat and size account, while the much smaller Schipperke has a distinct mane and weight description. Compare their actual routines rather than treating these different upright-eared dogs as one household-care category.
