Dalmatian: short-coat care and age-appropriate activity

The Dalmatian’s short, spotted coat covers a strong body slightly longer than its height. The brushing routine is fairly compact, while daily activity takes a separate commitment. A young dog’s outings also need different planning from the sustained exercise described for a mature adult.

Separate height descriptions

FCI gives heights of 56–62 cm for males and 54–60 cm for females, allowing dogs of excellent type and balance above the upper limit without penalty. The earlier UK guide instead gives ideals of 58–61 cm and 56–58 cm, emphasising overall balance. Neither provides a numerical weight here. FCI describes a 10:9 body-length-to-height proportion with a powerful level back.

Weekly coat work

AKC recommends weekly brushing with a horsehair mitt or rubber curry comb, occasional baths and nail trimming at least monthly. The UK grooming category is also weekly. Work through the short, dense coat to remove loose hair, including when its surface already looks sleek. Regular handling also gives an opportunity to notice how the coat, feet and nails are doing between longer outings.

Ears and growing dogs

AKC recommends regular ear checks and suggests asking the breeder or veterinarian to demonstrate a suitable cleaning routine and materials. Its exercise advice cautions about strenuous activity before two years, when the growing dog’s bones and joints are still maturing. Discuss the individual young dog’s activity with an appropriate professional; adult jogging or cycling examples should not become a puppy exercise schedule.

Room in the day

The earlier UK exercise category is more than two hours daily, with a large house and garden. AKC describes varied shared exercise, including walks, play and longer outings for suitable dogs. A large garden does not itself explain how that time will be spent with the owner. Compare the Canaan Dog and Kooikerhondje profiles for different sizes, coats and daily categories, while keeping the Dalmatian’s substantial activity commitment in view.

The Dalmatian standard says dogs of excellent type and balance should not be penalized for exceeding the upper height figure. It gives no new numeric ceiling for that exception.
