Field Spaniel: flat feathering over a strong, level back

The Field Spaniel’s FCI description combines a balanced outline with a strong, level back and a deep chest. Its coat is long, flat, glossy and silky. Feathering is abundant on the chest, underside and backs of the legs, while the lower hindlegs are clear of it between the hocks and the ground.

Flat hair beside tight curls

The coat is dense and weatherproof, without a curly or wiry texture. This makes the Irish Water Spaniel a useful contrast: its body hair forms tight, crisp ringlets, and its tail has short curls only near the base.

The English Cocker shares a flat, silky coat description, but its own standard warns against excessive hair and gives different measurements. Compare the actual coat and frame rather than relying on the spaniel label alone.

A medium dog with substantial time entries

The earlier UK guide lists more than two hours of daily exercise, grooming more than once a week, a small house and a large garden in a country setting. The Irish Water Spaniel shares those exercise, grooming, garden and location entries but has a large-house category.

The English Cocker’s exercise entry is up to one hour and its garden category smaller. These earlier guide differences can help organise a comparison around your available time and space.

A natural coat still needs attention

AKC’s Field Spaniel care advice recommends weekly brushing and combing, with limited tidying around the head and feet rather than clipping the body. Flat, silky hair therefore still involves regular work, but the advice is to preserve the body coat rather than clip it away.

Its exercise advice combines regular physical activity with mental challenges and explicitly describes Field Spaniels in both city and country lifestyles. That is a broader picture than the older UK country category alone. Available activity and engagement are more useful questions to explore than the postcode alone.

The height applies to both sexes

The FCI standard gives approximately 46 cm for both males and females, with 18–25 kg also applying to both sexes. The height is approximate; it is not a separate male ideal followed by an unstated smaller female figure.
