Flat Coated Retriever: a feathered outline

The Flat Coated Retriever combines a flat coat with longer hair on the legs and tail. Its FCI description calls for power without a heavy outline. Black and liver are the colors described by the standard, giving this retriever a different appearance from the gold or cream of a Golden.

Flat hair, longer feathering

The dense coat has a fine-to-medium texture and lies as flat as possible. Feathering is the longer hair along the legs and tail; full furnishings develop at maturity. It gives a different outline from the Labrador’s short coat without feathering, or the Curly’s close curls.

Planning for the coat and the day

The earlier UK guide records grooming more than once a week and more than two hours of daily exercise. It pairs these with a large house and large garden, in town or country. The Golden has the same broad categories, making coat texture and outline useful additional points to compare.

The Labrador’s grooming entry is weekly. A shared large-size category therefore does not capture all the differences that matter when thinking about the time a dog may take. These are earlier guide categories, not a personal care plan.

Preferred measurements, with a condition

The FCI height figures are preferred ranges. Its preferred weights, 27–36 kg for males and 25–32 kg for females, apply in hard condition. They are not unrestricted targets for every Flat Coated Retriever.

Compare with the Golden to look at two feathered retrievers, or with the Labrador for a short-coated contrast. The measurements below help put their outlines in perspective.
