French Bulldog: a small, stocky silhouette

The French Bulldog’s FCI description combines a short, stocky body with a broad head and erect ears. The ears are wide at the base and rounded at the top. This gives a different outline from the Beagle’s longer, hanging ears, even though both appear in the small UK size category.

A smooth coat without undercoat

The coat is close, glossy and soft, with no undercoat in the FCI description. Fawn, with or without brindling, and white spotting are part of the standard’s color description.

The Affenpinscher makes a useful small-dog comparison: its harsh, dense body hair and bushy facial furnishings create a much rougher outline. The French Bulldog’s smooth coat instead leaves its stocky proportions clearly visible.

Similar size labels, different care entries

The earlier UK guide lists weekly grooming and up to one hour of daily exercise. It records a flat or apartment and a small or medium garden, in town or country.

The Affenpinscher has the same exercise category but grooming more than once a week. The Beagle also has weekly grooming, with a small house in its home category. These earlier guide entries help compare available time and space; they do not establish suitability for a particular household.

Keep the standard’s proportions in view

The FCI height and weight figures differ by sex. Their separate allowances are explained in the facts below, including the extra weight allowance that applies only to a typical specimen. The standard also calls for overall harmony rather than exaggeration of any one feature.
