German Spitz Klein: a small frame with a full standing coat

The Klein is the smaller of the two German Spitz profiles compared here. A square outline, neck ruff and curled bushy tail sit beneath a profuse double coat. Its smaller body does not make undercoat maintenance a small task during shedding.

Keep the Klein measurements in view

The Klein’s own part of FCI standard 97 gives 27 cm with a tolerance of 3 cm either way. The earlier UK description gives 23–29 cm. The FCI calls for weight corresponding to size without specifying kilograms. These are Klein figures; the Mittel has a separate height description.

Body length and height are in a 1:1 ratio in the FCI description. Long, straight, firm outer hair stands over short, dense undercoat; the head and front of the limbs have shorter hair. The ruff and leg feathering need attention as well as the body coat.

Regular checks between thorough grooming

The AKC German Spitz care guide covers the breed generally, including the Klein and Mittel in its history. It recommends a quick brush every couple of days and a thorough weekly groom outside shedding season. During the heavy undercoat change, described as lasting two or three weeks twice yearly, brushing becomes daily.

The earlier UK Klein guide uses a daily grooming category. Keep the difference visible when planning your week. The AKC guide says baths are infrequent and dried mud can be brushed out; removing loose undercoat is still a separate job from simply getting the surface clean.

Small-home exercise

The UK guide includes a flat or apartment, small or medium garden and up to one hour of exercise. The AKC suggests regular walks, indoor hide-and-seek and rolling a ball along the floor. It also stresses secure exercise space and checking small gaps and access to ponds. Short indoor games can supplement the walk on wet days.

Compare size without combining the profiles

The Mittel shares the German Spitz care guide but has its own larger height range and different UK home and grooming categories. The Pomeranian has its own FCI section, smaller height and separate AKC grooming advice. Compare the amount of coat handling as well as the centimeters.
