Glen of Imaal Terrier: substantial build and a puppy-aware routine
The Glen of Imaal Terrier has a body longer than its height, a harsh outer coat and soft undercoat. Its low outline makes age-appropriate activity planning especially relevant alongside the regular coat routine.
Size wording across guides
FCI gives a male maximum height of 35.5 cm and females accordingly less. Male weight is 16 kg, females accordingly less, without a numeric female interval. The earlier UK description instead gives a maximum of 35–36 cm for both sexes and no numeric weight.
The FCI body is deep and long, with a slight topline rise towards the rear and a strong loin. Its medium-length coat is harsh over soft undercoat, and may be tidied to a neat outline.
Coat work and regular checks
The UK grooming category is more than once a week. AKC care advice describes weekly brushing, attention to the furnishings around the ears, neck, legs and belly, and stripping two or three times yearly. A sturdy grooming surface can make regular handling easier.
The guide also includes regular nails, weekly ear checks and frequent tooth brushing with toothpaste made for dogs. Ask a groomer to demonstrate the coat work and how to manage the furnishings between full grooming sessions.
A growing dog needs a different plan
The UK guide lists up to one hour of exercise, a small house, small or medium garden and country setting. AKC describes moderate exercise and advises keeping early leash walks short and enjoyable. It cautions against puppies jumping from sofas or using steep stairs.
Agree a growing-dog activity plan with a veterinarian rather than making a puppy complete an adult walking schedule. Shared toy or ball play in the house or a fenced yard is another activity described by the care guide.
Compare other low terriers
Dandie Dinmont Terriers have a curving topline, a crisp outer coat and their own height-to-length guidance. Sealyham Terriers have a long, wiry coat and an oblong outline. Compare adult dimensions and grooming routines while also asking how puppy activity will be managed.
