Great Swiss Mountain Dog: a shorter coat with seasonal undercoat work

The Great Swiss Mountain Dog has a heavy-boned frame and a double coat. Ordinary maintenance is comparatively simple, with a larger job when undercoat loosens. Walking and shared outdoor time accompany that seasonal routine.

A slightly longer body

Both FCI and earlier UK descriptions give males 65–72 cm and females 60–68 cm at the shoulder, without a numerical weight here. Body length to height is 10:9, with a straight back, broad loin and a chest reaching the elbows.

The FCI describes medium-length outer hair and dense undercoat, permitting shorter outer hair if undercoat remains. The UK overview calls the coat short. Looking beneath that short-looking outline matters when deciding how much loose undercoat needs removing.

A bigger job at the seasonal shed

The AKC describes undercoat shedding usually twice yearly. At those times it suggests a bath and blow-out followed by thorough brushing with a rake or shedding tool. Outside shedding, occasional bathing and brushing form its ordinary routine; the UK category is weekly grooming.

Regular nail trimming and ear and teeth cleaning are also included. If a full coat blow-out is unfamiliar, arrange a groomer’s demonstration rather than treating the relatively short hair as a reason to ignore the dense layer beneath.

A walking-oriented activity plan

The UK guide places exercise up to one hour, with a large house and garden in the country. The AKC describes moderate activity, such as walks or woodland outings, and favours hiking companionship over marathon running or cycling. Plan shared outings that fit the particular dog rather than reading its working history as a requirement for endurance sports.

Compare three Swiss routines

The Bernese has long outer hair and daily brushing during shedding. The Entlebucher is smaller in its height description and has a more active daily exercise recommendation. Their similar markings leave important differences in coat handling, physical size and the time spent outdoors.
