Greenland Dog: open-ended heights and seasonal undercoat work
The Greenland Dog has a strong, slightly rectangular body beneath a dense double coat. The fuller coat description is more informative than a simple medium-length label. Its own size guidance and coat routine should remain separate from the Canadian Eskimo Dog’s, even where their appearance invites comparison.
Minimum heights versus UK ranges
FCI gives male heights from 60 cm and female heights from 55 cm, without an upper height or numerical weight in that clause. The earlier UK guide instead gives 58–68 cm and 34–47.5 kg for males, with 51–61 cm and 27–41 kg for females. An FCI lower threshold is not a closed range. Keep those UK weight figures with the UK description rather than supplying an absent FCI weight.
Body shape and coat structure
FCI describes a height-to-body-length ratio of 10:11, allowing females a slightly longer body. The UK account also describes a compact body slightly longer than high, with a level back and deep, broad chest. Both describe coarse, straight outer hair over dense undercoat. UK specifically describes undercoat of 2.5–5 cm; the longer outer hair and furnishings at the neck, breeches and tail are a separate layer.
Removing loose hair through the year
The Canadian Kennel Club’s Greenland Dog guidance recommends regular raking of the double coat to remove dead hair, with particular attention during seasonal shedding. The earlier UK category is weekly grooming. That combination retains ordinary coat care and recognises the extra work during a moult without inventing a precise rake schedule. Learn a suitable technique for the dog’s actual coat and allow time to work through dense areas. No fixed bath, clipping or stripping programme is supplied by this guidance.
Space, outings and alternatives
UK lists more than two hours of daily exercise, a large country home and a large garden. CKC also describes substantial outdoor exercise but does not provide a numerical daily prescription. A working history alone does not establish an individual dog’s conditioning or a training programme. Compare the Canadian Eskimo Dog’s own size and guard-hair description, or the Tibetan Mastiff’s seasonal coat work and moderate activity account, before choosing by a heavy-coated appearance alone.
