Icelandic Sheepdog: two coat lengths and seasonal brushing

The Icelandic Sheepdog has a rectangular body, erect ears and a bushy curled tail. Both short and long coat forms have substantial undercoat. The difference in outer-hair length matters when looking through the furnishings, while heavier seasonal shedding can change the amount of grooming needed in either form.

Ideal heights and outline

FCI and the earlier UK guide give ideal heights of 46 cm for males and 42 cm for females. Neither supplies a numerical weight here. The body is longer than its height, with a level, muscular back, broad loin and deep ribcage. Keep those ideals with their own breed description rather than borrowing the ranges or weight figures of another northern herding breed.

Short and long coats

Both standards describe a fairly coarse outer coat over thick, soft undercoat. In the long form, hair is longer behind the ears, around the neck and chest, along the withers and on the thighs, with foreleg fringes and a fuller tail. Shorter hair remains on the face and fronts of the legs. The shorter form still has undercoat and furnishings, so it is not a smooth, single-coated alternative.

Routine and shedding-season care

AKC’s general breed guidance suggests weekly brushing, increasing to daily during twice-yearly shedding. It mentions a slicker brush or metal comb for tangles and regular nail trimming. Its practical health guidance also supports ear checks and frequent tooth brushing with dog toothpaste. The UK grooming category is weekly. Learn the amount of work needed for the actual short or long coat rather than judging it only from photographs.

Daily activity and comparison

The UK category is up to an hour of daily exercise, with a small house and small or medium garden. AKC describes moderate daily walks and shared play, with other activities as options. Allow grooming time in addition to those outings when shedding increases. Compare the Norwegian Buhund’s square outline and brushing frequency, or the Lancashire Heeler’s smaller body and shorter coat, using their own measurements and care descriptions.
