Irish Red and White Setter: natural feathering and age-aware activity

The Irish Red and White Setter has a strong, athletic frame and fine feathering. It should look natural after grooming, with the longer hair kept free of tangles. Daily activity matters, but the routine for a growing youngster differs from adult jogging or cycling.

An athletic rather than racy outline

The FCI gives desirable shoulder heights of 62–66 cm for males and 57–61 cm for females. The earlier UK size section is blank, so these numbers come from the FCI description. No numerical weight is supplied in these sections.

The body is strong and muscular, with a deep chest and well-sprung ribs. Fine, silky feathering grows behind the legs, on the ears, along the underside and on the tail. It should lie straight and flat, although a slight wave is allowed.

Keep grooming natural and manageable

The AKC recommends weekly all-over grooming with a soft brush and a slicker or comb for tangles. Limited tidying can neaten the edges without changing the natural appearance. The UK grooming category is more than once weekly, allowing room for smaller checks between thorough sessions.

The same AKC routine includes weekly ear checks for wax and debris, a bath about monthly and nail trimming every few weeks as needed. Pay attention to the feathering as well as the body, and ask a groomer to demonstrate any tidying you cannot manage confidently.

Growing dogs need a different exercise plan

The UK category exceeds two hours daily, with a large house and garden in town or country. The AKC describes substantial activity but advises low-impact exercise while growing, avoiding jogging or cycling until about 18 months. It suggests fenced free exercise and regular walks, so the young dog has activity without simply following an adult endurance routine.

Compare the setter outlines

The Irish Setter is racier in its own description, with chestnut feathering and an AKC recommendation for brushing at least twice weekly. The English Setter has a slightly wavy coat and different FCI heights. Similar UK exercise categories should not hide the distinctions in coat texture, build and grooming.
