Irish Terrier: a racy outline and a dense, wiry coat
The Irish Terrier has a more racy outline than many compact terriers, with a strong, straight back and a dense, broken-looking coat. Size descriptions differ between its UK and FCI guides, so the source matters when comparing figures.
Height and coat texture
FCI height is approximately 45.5 cm without separate male and female intervals. Weight is 12.25 kg for males and 11.4 kg for females. The earlier UK guide instead gives ideal heights of 48 cm for males and 46 cm for females, without a numeric weight range.
The FCI coat is dense and wiry, lying flat without softness, silkiness, locks or curls. Facial hair is short apart from a slight beard. The body should be neither too long nor too short, with a muscular, slightly arched loin.
Brushing, stripping and smaller care tasks
The UK grooming category is more than once a week. AKC care guidance describes weekly brushing and regular stripping and trimming, ideally hand-stripping the outer coat rather than clipping it. Ask a groomer to demonstrate what that choice means for maintenance.
Regular nails, ear checks and frequent tooth brushing with dog toothpaste are included in the same guide. These can be planned alongside brushing, while full coat work may require a separate appointment.
Walking and shared activity
The UK guide lists up to one hour of exercise daily, a small house, small or medium garden and either town or country. AKC stresses regular exercise and a fenced yard, or leashed walks several times a day. It lists agility, rally and other canine activities as options.
Think through the actual routes and daily time available, rather than counting garden access as the whole exercise routine. Adapt activity to the individual dog’s age and condition.
Compare two different coats
Airedale Terriers are taller in the FCI height description and combine a wiry outer layer with softer undercoat. Kerry Blue Terriers have a soft, plentiful, wavy coat instead. Those textures and dimensions are useful comparisons before choosing how much grooming work you can maintain.
