Italian Spinone: a harsh coat without undercoat
The Spinone has a solid, nearly square frame, a bearded face and a harsh coat. The rough appearance still needs skilled maintenance. Its lack of undercoat and hand-stripping routine make it a different grooming choice from several other wirehaired gundogs.
A distinctive topline and two weight descriptions
The FCI gives shoulder heights of 60–70 cm for males and 58–65 cm for females, matching the earlier UK guide. FCI weights are 32–37 kg for males and 28–30 kg for females; the UK guide gives 34–39 kg and 29–34 kg respectively.
The FCI body is almost square, allowing length 1–2 cm greater than height. The back rises gently towards a slightly convex loin before the croup slopes down. Harsh, dense, rather flat body hair is 4–6 cm long without undercoat; the backs of the legs have brushy hair rather than fringes.
Natural appearance still takes work
The AKC guide recommends hand-stripping dead hair rather than scissoring, to maintain the natural rough coat. Ask a groomer familiar with Spinoni to demonstrate the method. The earlier UK category is grooming more than once weekly, so care does not end with an occasional professional visit.
The AKC routine includes ear cleaning at least weekly and weekly nail trimming. Its further care advice supports regular ear checks and frequent, ideally daily, tooth brushing with dog toothpaste. Keep those smaller jobs in the plan alongside the beard and coat.
Compare the exercise guidance honestly
The UK category exceeds two hours daily. The AKC describes a lower-intensity sporting dog and places emphasis on a securely fenced garden, play and family participation, without requiring a hike every day. These are different descriptions; neither supports copying another pointer’s running schedule or leaving the dog alone outdoors as its whole routine.
Compare the Italian and German coats
The Bracco Italiano has short glossy hair, with different ear-care and puppy-activity advice. The German Wirehaired Pointer has dense undercoat and shorter wire hair, with a comb-and-slicker routine. A rough face alone does not mean all three need the same tools or exercise plan.
