Japanese Chin: long silky hair with a regular handling routine

The Japanese Chin has a compact body beneath long, straight hair. The coat’s full appearance does not describe the whole care job: brushing, ears, nails and teeth each need time. Slow walks and suitable outdoor play belong alongside that maintenance.

Different height and weight descriptions

The FCI gives male height as approximately 25 cm, with females slightly smaller, without a numerical weight. The earlier UK guide instead gives ideal weight 1.8–3.2 kg and no numerical height. Quality and soundness take priority over making the dog as small as possible.

The body is square in the UK description, while FCI allows females slightly more length. Long, straight, silky hair carries fuller furnishings on the ears, neck, thighs and tail. The UK description excludes curl or wave and describes hair standing out around the neck frill.

A weekly brush and regular smaller jobs

The AKC recommends weekly brushing and a bath roughly monthly, depending on the dog’s surroundings. The UK category is grooming more than once weekly. Allow smaller checks between full sessions, especially when the furnishings have collected debris from an outing.

The same care guide recommends regular nail trimming, ear checks and tooth brushing. Those jobs remain part of the routine even when the long outer hair is easy to brush; ask for a demonstration if you need help handling the feet or ears gently.

Slow walks and secure outdoor time

The UK exercise category is up to half an hour, with a flat or apartment and small or medium garden in either setting. The AKC suggests slow walks and exploration in a fenced area, with lead control outdoors. Plan outings with the dog rather than treating small floor-space requirements as a substitute for activity.

Compare the layers and furnishings

The King Charles Spaniel has long feathering with pin-brush and comb work in its own care guide. The Pekingese has coarse outer hair over thick undercoat and a larger brushing commitment. Compare those hands-on jobs alongside the different size descriptions.
