Leonberger: daily mat checks and a fuller weekly groom

The Leonberger carries a long coat over thick undercoat and a large, muscular frame. Daily attention and a more thorough weekly session are distinct jobs. Both belong in the ownership plan alongside regular activity with the dog.

Recommended averages within the ranges

The FCI gives males 72–80 cm, with recommended average 76 cm, and females 65–75 cm, recommended average 70 cm. The earlier UK guide supplies the same overall ranges without a numerical weight. The recommended averages are not separate minimum heights.

Height to body length is 9:10 and chest depth is nearly half the height. Long, close-fitting hair may be straight or slightly wavy, with a neck mane and leg feathering. The thick undercoat should not hide the body’s shape.

Two levels of grooming

The AKC recommends daily brushing, especially the mat-prone hair behind the ears and on the backs of the legs, plus a more thorough weekly groom. Suggested tools include a metal comb and undercoat rake for the lower layer, with pin and slicker brushes for the outer hair.

It describes heavier shedding twice yearly and nail trimming every other week. The UK weekly grooming category does not capture the smaller daily mat-checking job, so include both when estimating the time needed for such a large coat.

An adult activity plan

The UK exercise category exceeds two hours daily, with a large country house and garden. The AKC describes daily activity and mature-dog options such as hiking, as well as a large securely fenced space. Plan suitable shared activity for the dog’s stage of growth; a list of adult sports is not a puppy exercise prescription.

Compare the maintenance underneath

The Hovawart has long outer hair but relatively little undercoat. The Newfoundland carries a different water-resistant double coat and needs thorough slicker-and-comb work. Compare those actual grooming methods and the daily checks, rather than treating every large long-haired dog as the same job.
