Lowchen: a wavy coat with a choice of pet or show trim

The Lowchen has a short, balanced body under long, wavy hair. The familiar lion appearance comes from a particular trim rather than a naturally bare rear. Regular brushing and planned grooming visits both need time alongside walks and shared play.

Size ranges and the lion outline

The FCI gives height 26–32 cm, with a separate tolerance of 1 cm either way, and approximate weight 6 kg. The earlier UK guide instead gives 25–33 cm without a numerical weight. Keep the main FCI range distinct from its tolerance when comparing size.

The FCI body is square, with a straight topline and short, strong loin. Long, silky, wavy hair has no undercoat. The lion clip is required for showing in that standard, while the UK description likewise distinguishes the natural longer hair from the specifically clipped areas.

Regular brushing and planned trims

The AKC suggests brushing every few days and bathing roughly every couple of weeks. It also describes visits to a groomer or breeder every couple of months for either a puppy cut or traditional lion trim. That pet-cut option is separate from the show presentation.

The UK grooming category is more than once weekly. Include regular nail care and ear cleaning from the AKC guide as well, and ask a groomer to show how to work through the longer hair between appointments. A shorter pet trim does not remove those handling jobs.

Walks and activities together

The UK exercise category is up to one hour, with a flat or apartment and small or medium garden in either setting. The AKC suggests fenced play, walks and shared activities, while not presenting the dog as a long-distance running companion. Plan a varied routine around the individual dog.

Compare the coat methods

The Australian Silky Terrier has straighter hair and its own pin-brush and comb routine. The Papillon also lacks undercoat, but has particular mat checks behind the ears and inside the hind legs. Similar small size leaves different grooming areas and trim decisions to manage.
